My current drawing assignment involves making three versions of one character, with only the hair color changing between the finished images. The outfit is mostly blue, the background is quiet, and the final drawings will often be viewed as fairly small images. I have started with brown, copper, and silver as distinct options, hoping their differences will make the comparison easier to discuss. My search for ways to explain warm and cool color choices brought me to a personal color test as a starting point for further reading. I would like the terminology to help with critique, while leaving room for the intentional color exaggeration that illustration often uses. My main question is how to judge the balance between the face and hair once the character is shown as a thumbnail. Should I compare the three color versions together and then inspect values, or begin with the value check before discussing hue? Please suggest concrete things to look for, so our feedback describes what each version does within this particular composition.

Having read a few different perspectives recently, I can confidently say that your systematic approach to presenting this data makes it one of the most useful pieces I have seen.
